I’d apologize for how long it’s been, but I know we’ve all come to expect it at this point. In all honesty, I’ve just been feeling uninspired and unmotivated. I got stuck in a routine that wasn’t terrible, but it definitely wasn’t designed for inspiration or creativity. I’m really making an effort to switch things up going forward, and I’m very excited about that!
Speaking of switching things up, this blog has a new layout! I’m hoping the image-forward design will force me to get creative in both photography and writing. I love taking pictures and I’ve wanted to add photography to this blog for a while, so I’m excited to have a layout now that requires it!
With all that said, let’s jump into the topic of today’s post. I live in the South, and summer down here is hot. Like, hot. Sometimes it feels like I’m living inside the fire emoji! It’s actually been fairly cool lately, with highs in the low 80s and even occasionally in the 70s- unheard of for late May. I know it’s only a matter of time before the temperatures rise to their usual summer levels, so I’m trying to get my essentials in order before that happens! I have three things I absolutely cannot live without in the summer, and I’m excited to share them with y’all.
Not only is it hot down here, it’s also almost always incredibly sunny. I love the sun (so much so that I started crying the first time I saw the sun after a long Michigan winter) but my sensitive blue eyes don’t! I rely heavily on sunglasses to protect my eyes from the harsh sun, and they’re also a great fashion statement. For a long time I wore the classic wayfarer style, but I’ve had these Ray Ban aviators for just about a year now and I can officially say that I’m a convert! I want to get a few more pairs in different styles so I can mix up my sunglass choice to go with my outfit for the day, but the aviators are a classic choice so I’m not in too much of a hurry to get new ones. No matter what style you choose, sunglasses are an essential for bright, sunny summers!
I am incredibly, shockingly pale. I rely heavily on self-tanner to keep me from looking like Casper when I’m in a bathing suit! My penchant for horseback riding does absolutely nothing to help my paleness- other than giving me a delightful farmer’s
tan sunburn where my forearms have color and the rest of me is bright white. As a result of being so pale, I burn very quickly when I’m out in the sun. The only natural tan I’ve ever gotten came from a bad sunburn that faded from red into brown.
All that to say, I can’t live without sunscreen in the summer. I put it on my face every day year round, and in the summer I apply it on all exposed skin when I’m planning on being in the sun. I love the Supergoop sunscreen for my face, and the Banana Boat Cool Zone sunscreen for my body- it has a refreshing cool feeling when you put it on, and it doesn’t feel greasy or heavy! Sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from sunburns and skin cancer, and putting it on your face every day is one of the best ways to counteract aging, even when you’re young.
The last thing I can’t live without is my S’well water bottle. To be honest, I listed this essential as S’well because then all three items start with the letter “S”, but any water bottle will do the trick! I particularly love insulated water bottles because they keep water cold for a very long time, which is crucial when you’re going to be outside for a while. Nothing is worse than getting all hot and sweaty outside in the summer and taking a sip of water you think will be nice and cold, only to find it’s hot from sitting in the sun.
I use a S’well because it’s well insulated and it’s pretty, and I know that I’m much more likely to carry a water bottle with me if it’s pretty. It sounds silly, but if it gets me to drink more water I don’t care how silly it is! Drinking water is so important, especially in the summer when it’s really hot and you’re more prone to get dehydrated. It’s taken me a long time to really understand the importance of drinking lots of water, but now I’m a huge proponent of it! Drink water, y’all- it’s so good for you!
There you have it: my top three summer essentials. There are tons of other products I love to use in the summertime, but these are the three I use every day, without fail. I truly could not live without them! What are the products you can’t live without?
